The arithmetic every P&L obeys

Price is the most powerful and fastest profit lever

Grow volume and the extra revenue arrives loaded with extra cost. Improve price and the gain drops straight to profit. At a typical 8% operating margin, one point of price grows profit by 12.5%. That is arithmetic, before any volume effect. One point is a conservative figure. Discount discipline alone can recover it. Setting list prices on value, and passing cost increases through, usually recovers more.

Pricing does more than protect profit. Price architecture, the conditions behind your discounts and rebates, puts the incentives where they move your customers most. Managed well, pricing grows sales as well as margin.

Watch: why one point of price grows profit by 12.5%. One minute, sound optional.

+12.5%
profit growth from +1% price
+25%
profit growth from +2% price
+37.5%
profit growth from +3% price

Pure price effect, volume unchanged, at an 8% operating margin. Your margin changes the multiplier: at 5%, one point of price is +20% profit.

The Pricing Excellence Model

Five levels. Every step up has a number.

Pricing capability grows in stages. Each level builds on the last, and each step up adds measurable profit to your P&L. The question is not whether to climb, it is how far and how fast you choose to go.

1
Level 1
Baseline, no uplift

Firefighting

Scattered data, deal-by-deal decisions, margin leaking silently. Every deal is priced from scratch, and what one negotiation learns, the next one loses. Most companies start here, and it costs them every day. Priority: one reliable pricing & commercial database, the foundation for Level 2.

2
Level 2
+4% to +10% profit uplift

Cost-Disciplined

Facts replace gut feel. Costs, discounts and margins are transparent, and disciplined cost-based rules govern prices. The foundation level: the most obvious leaks stop, and every price decision can be explained and repeated.

3
Level 3
+3.5% to +7% profit uplift

Competitor-Aware

Pricing turns outward: competitive intelligence and market position shape every price. Win-win scenarios protect share while lifting margin, and each price move anticipates the response it will provoke.

4
Level 4
+3% to +5% profit uplift

Value-Priced

Prices reflect the value each customer segment actually receives, with proof: the financial value the offer creates for each client is measured. Solution selling replaces product-by-product discounting, and the sales conversation moves from price to value delivered.

5
Level 5
+2.5% to +4% profit uplift

Precision Pricing

Fast, nimble, and right every time: an AI-powered commercial and pricing platform optimizes each price with industry dynamics factored in, predicts the impact before each move, and learns from every deal. New products are designed to price, and the company leads pricing in its industry.

In their words

I met Frederic at GE’s Crotonville Leadership Development Center, when I was Chief Marketing Officer for the GE Healthcare Service P&L in Europe. He was leading pricing globally for GE Oil & Gas, now Baker Hughes, and was building new capabilities that were clearly delivering results in that business. I asked him whether he could help us do the same in healthcare. The impact was terrific. With his leadership and support, we uncovered $45 million of profit leakage over our $1 billion P&L, identified the process and enabler roadblocks holding us back, and built a blueprint to implement the changes and capture the value. Just as important, he achieved strong cross-functional alignment and secured buy-in from the CEO, CFO and VP of Sales. I endorse Frederic without hesitation for his deep commercial and pricing expertise, strong pragmatism and commercial acumen.
